COURSE INTRODUCTION
Landscape Architecture is the profession that applies artistic and scientific principles to the research, planning, design, and management of both natural and built environments. Practitioners of this profession apply creative and technical skills and scientific, cultural, and political knowledge in the planned arrangement of natural and constructed elements on the land with a concern for the stewardship and conservation of natural, constructed, and human resources. The resulting environments shall serve useful, aesthetic, safe, and enjoyable purposes (American Society of Landscape Architects). The major purpose of this course is to inspire students through the exploration of this definition and to develop their understanding of the many aspects of the profession of Landscape Architecture.
Through assignments, your presentations, lecturers, field trips and guest speakers the various types of professional responsibilities, significant personalities and the historical development of landscape architecture will be explored. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of professionalism and of what makes landscape architecture a profession concerned with balancing society’s needs with the well-being of our environment.
